The shipping matrix can often be troublesome for new store owners. It seems to work better for some stores than others!
Please read through the following threads and if you still have questions, then post them in the "help" forum and someone will come along to assist you.

CAN I SHIP BY ZONE?

There is NO ZONE shipping in this system.

There are two choices.

Fixed shipping --- which does not work for international other then Canada
or
Weight based shipping - the Shipping matrix.

Actually, you can still use PayPal -- you just have to manually fill in all the info -- by starting from this page:

COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THE SHIPPING MATRIX?

"Shipping matrix is an important part of the weight-based shipping. Sometimes flat rate shipping is not suitable. For example imagine that you are selling post cards, or stamps or t-shirts. If you set a flat rate of $5 per item and somebody orders from your store four post cards the shipping will total $20. Obviously, it is not acceptable to pay $20 just for shipping just of four post cards. Here is where the weight based shipping can help. With the shipping matrix you can set different rates depending on the total order's weight.

- The horizontal represents all weights according to the weight scale you choose in the "Weight Scales" menu.

- The vertical lists all the zones that you have selected in the 'Shipping Zones' menu

- Where the horizontal and the verticals cross, fill out the shipping prices."

The above section is taken from the "STORE SET UP" thread in the board rules forum.

ACRead wrote:

maybe an example would help you figure things out.

Let's say you have 5 books for sale. An you are listing two of these as "weight dependable" and the other one "flat shipping" (or flat rate shipping.

book A weighs 0.8 lb (weight dependable shipping)
book B weighs 1.2 lb (weight dependable shipping)
book C weighs 1.1 lb (weight dependable shipping)
book D weighs 0.9 lb (flat rate shipping)
book E weighs 1.2 lb (flat rate shipping)

You put the information in the product listings:
book D flat rate shipping to: US mainland $1.70, Hawaii, $1.70, Alaska $1.70, Canada $5.5
book E flat rate shipping to: US mainland $2.80, Hawaii, $2.80, Alaska $2.80, Canada $6

And let's say you entered the following in the shipping matrix (Since you have items listed as "weight dependable" you'll need to enter values in the shipping matrix, otherwise they will be taken as $0.00. Since that is what appears before you fill the matrix out.):

Zone________1____2__4_...._10_12_....16+
US Mainland___2____2.5_4.5 ....__7__8__....1
Alaska________2____2.5_4.5 ....__7__8__....1
Hawaii________2____2.5_4.5 ....__7__8__....1
Canada_______2.6___3__4.5 ....__7__8__....1

Example 1: If the customer buys items A and B (one of each), since they are both selected as "weight dependable" shipping, ecrater will look up their weights which are: 0.8 lb and 1.2 lb. Add them you get 2 lb. eCrater will look at the shipping matrix under 2 lb and the customer location. If the customer is in US mainland the shipping cost will be 2.5 (the one in blue).

Example 2: If the customer buys items A and C (one of each), since they are both selected as "weight dependable" shipping, ecrater will look up their weights which are: 0.8 lb and 1.1 lb. Add them you get 1.9 lb. eCrater will look at the shipping matrix under 2 lb (the closest higher number in the matrix) and the customer location. If the customer is in US mainland the shipping cost will be again 2.5 (the one in blue).

Example 3: If the customer (located in US mainland) buys items D and E (one of each), since they are both selected as "flat" rate shipping, ecrater will look at the listings of those items and pick the shipping costs from there as: $1.70 (the one in orange) and $1.80 (the one in green). Add them you get $3.50 shipping cost.

Example 4: If the customer buys items A and D (one of each), one "weight dependable" shipping and the other flat rate, ecrater will look up the weight for weight dependable which is: 0.8 lb. Then eCrater will look at the shipping matrix under 1 lb and the customer location. If the customer is in US mainland the shipping cost for that item will be $2 (the one in red). Then eCrater will take the shipping cost for item D which is $1.70 for US mainland and add the two. Which would make $2 + $1.7 = $3.7. So the customer will be charged $3.7 shipping cost for this order.

Example 5: If the customer buys items A, B and D (one of each), two "weight dependable" shipping and the other flat rate, ecrater will first add the weights of the weight dependable items (0.8 lb + 1.2 lb = 2 lb) then look up the weight for weight dependable portion of the order from the matrix. Since the total weight of that portion is 2 lb that what will be looked up at the matrix. So the shipping cost for that portion of the order is for the US mainland customer: $2.5 (the one in blue). Then eCrater will take the shipping cost for item D which is $1.70 for US mainland and add the two. Which would make $2.5 + $1.7 = $4.2. So the customer will be charged $4.2 shipping cost for this order.

The Shipping Calculator:

This option is a global feature which applies to the whole store.

If the item you are shipping is too heavy the USPS might not return a response and the eCrater system will use the fall back shipping option you have.

If the response from USPS takes too long and the eCrater system will use the fall back shipping option you have.

If you have the USPS calculated shipping (the shipping calculator) enabled in your store, the Google Checkout coupon code will not work. The coupon code entry box will not appear at the payment page at Google Checkout.

The coupon code offer is an optional service, so it will not effect the functioning of Google Checkout or your stores payment acceptance process.

Converting ounces to pounds as decimals

1 divided 16 = 0.0625
that means 1 ounce is equal to 0.0625
Here's a chart

1 oz = 0.0625
2 oz = 0.125
3 oz = 0.1875
4 oz = 0.25 ---- that's 1/4 of a pound
5 oz = 0.3125
6 oz = 0.375
7 oz = 0.4375
8 oz = 0.50 ---- that's is half a pound
9 oz = 0.5625
10 oz = 0.625
11 oz = 0.6875
12 oz = 0.75 ---- that's 3/4 of a pound
13 oz = 0.8125
14 oz = 0.875
15 oz = 0.9375
16 oz = 1 ---- that's 1 pound

When buyers use paypal shipping charged twice
http://community.ecrater.com/viewtopic.php?t=13048

Most likely this is the results of having shipping automatically added at PayPal. It should be under Profile>Set Up Shipping Calculations
