When I started telling the story to my husband, he pegged their country of origin correctly without me even mentioning their names or where they were originally from. Although he did mention a more American family name.

That area of the world has produced a number of people who make their living as thieves - either stealing from stores or conning people.

He has run across them in his professional life and in his fraternal/charity life. He was ready to testify against one particular person after they stole charity money but the guy eventually pled guilty. He didn't think the 'nice guys' would file criminal charges. Part of the group said no in the beginning, but DH did his research and convinced them it was the only way to at least temporarily stop the guy who had done it before and would do it again.

There have been gypsies and thievery in the US for a long time.

My grandfather owned a small ranch and the gypsy wagons would roll through the area from time to time. They set up camp and then moved on. They always managed to steal some chickens from the ranchers in the area.

My grandfather had an idea to stop the thefts on his ranch anyway. When the gypsies arrived he went to their camp with a bag full of chickens and introduced himself and gave the chickens as a gift. He made sure to tell them where his ranch was located. That tactic seemed to work as the other ranchers lost chickens in the night but his ranch was not touched. lol

Added together, the toys and other goods that the Bogdanovs and their fence sold on eBay over the last decade fetched more than $4.2 million, court papers state.

Whoa! Glad they got caught.
