I'm sure most of you have heard, or read, the tragic news last week. The shooting rampage (for lack of a better word) happened about 2 miles north of Bell Florida, that is about 13 miles from where I live. Today I had to make a short visit to Bell. Most people I spoke with were still shaking their heads about the whole affair. The period of shock has faded now. The funerals for the children (possibly for the mother as well) happened on Monday. When I stopped at the grocery store up there, I noticed a TV news car over at one end of the parking lot. The grocery store is across the street from the school that several of the children attended. I think most people wish the reporters would go away, and perhaps come back some day when there is happy news to report.
Of the extended family, there were 11 people. 6 children, the mother, two fathers (each fathered 3 of the children), and the grandfather. The grandfather also had another son, which he accidentally shot in 2003. Of the 11, the only two remaining are the fathers. One is in prison, and the other is on his way to prison, neither for anything having to do with the tragic events of last week. A very sad end for the 6 children who did not deserve this. |

My new phrase about this is "Guns, collect the entire set" (which is all too true about some people in this community).
For the record (and as best as I understand it) everyone in that extended family (other than the kids) had some kind of criminal record. The grandfather was a convicted felon, and was not supposed to have access to any firearm. |
