I need help with Link Variants - Having trouble deselecting

So I have several items that are the same with choice of colors as the only difference.

I turned on the link variants in the Options and then selected 3 items and clicked the link variant button. I then deselected the 3 and selected 6 other items that vary again only by color.

After I clicked the Link Variant button I noticed the previous 3 were also still clicked even though I deselected them.

I have tried several times and the check box will not deselect. Now I am not sure if I have grouped diff items together.

Any suggestion of what I am doing wrong or how to fix?
