Selling Gift Certificates

For those of you who sell gift certificates, how do your customers redeem them and how do you track them? Thanks!

Whenever I've done it before I just kept track manually in a spreadsheet. They could be redeemed by using a unique code that's on each gift certificate (which is also how they'd be identified on the spreadsheet).

Different states have different laws regarding the sale or gift certificates and how long they must be good for and what happens if you go out of business, etc.

Too me gift certicates are too much work to find out each individual state laws. I know some states say once the gift certificate has expired the unspent funds must be turned over to the unclaimed monies for that state. Some say it's according to the state which the orginal purchase is in, others claim you must follow the rules of the state you live it. Too complicated for me!
