Just took delivery of my new laptop. Now I have to set it up and transfer files to it. If the air around you turns blue, you will know where it is coming from. |

My first thought was "Blues Clues", then I decided you were referring to The Smurfs. |

I was referring to bad language. Didn't you ever hear that expression "turning the air blue" or "swearing up a blue streak"?
What is a USB key? Instruction has lots of diagrams but not of the key. |

a USB key could be ...
1. a USB flash drive (aka a thumb drive)
or
2. a USB authentication dongle (similar to a thumb drive, but containing a key that authenticates a piece of software).
those are the only two I can think of. |

I think it was a code number. When I started to hook up the computer I was able to go to my old computer and get a key number to transfer the files from one to the other. The flash drive was mentioned as a flash drive.
I don't think this computer solved my problem however. I'm still figuring it out but the cursor seems as crazy as this one. I'm still typing on my old one. This one is still under warranty but the cursor was driving me up the wall. |

About the cursor... or curse-r
My son says you can right click on the desktop and select Personalize,
then Change Mousepointers near the upper left corner and that should have all the mouse options for you. Try adjusting your sensitivity.
Good luck!
I was running the 'blue air' remark past him to see if he got it.... he didn't but says that when your motherboad fails there can be a 'magic blue smoke' from parts melting. Yes, that really is a computer expression. |

Mom when I start dinking around with a computer the blue is caused by what comes out of my mouth. I have spent 2 days setting this thing up only to find that all the expensive software I paid for was only trial versions or very basic. This cursor either jerks or flies. I will have to see if what your son recommends will work.
I tried resetting the pointer. I'll see how this goes. Although it didn't hide the pointer which I checked. I've tried to respond to 2 topics tonight and both were deleted by the pointer. |

Oh dear, another sign I'm getting old.
I know exactly what Maggie's 'blue' is.
Been there. |

I think this computer is going back next week. I'll use it over the weekend to see if I can get used to it but the zoom feature is in the touch pad and it shrinks when my hand hovers near it but is very difficult to get it to enlarge. |

I would suggest to buy a wireless USB mouse and forget about using the touch pad. It makes using any laptop much easier. |

I have a mouse. It doesn't control it very well and since I am usually working from my lap on a sofa, the mouse doesn't work on upholstery.
I adjusted the pointer several times but it either becomes stiff and unusable or continues to fly about the screen deleting and causing typos. |

Not sure there is any reason to keep this new computer. I bought it hoping it would be better for writing than my current computer which is only 2 years old and works perfectly except for that. They are the same size and capacity. The new one came with a lot of software and other than office it isn't very useful to me. I have office installed in an old computer I keep for typing long documents. |
