Meta tags are the key words that describe what you sell in that store. They are what search engines look at to decided if you fit someones search.

Title Tag - show up there on top of the browser the top blue bar in IE and in firefox.

What are meta tags? They are information inserted into the "head" area of your web pages. Other than the title tag (explained below), information in the head area of your web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead, meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a human visitor may not be concerned with. Meta tags, for example, can tell a browser what "character set" to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content.

***********************************************************

The meta keywords tag allows you to provide additional text for crawler-based search engines to index along with your body copy. How does this help you? Well, for most major crawlers, it doesn't. That's because most crawlers now ignore the tag. The few supporting it can be found on the Search Engine Features page).

The meta keywords tag is sometimes useful as a way to reinforce the terms you think a page is important for ON THE FEW CRAWLERS THAT SUPPORT IT. For instance, if you had a page about stamp collecting -- AND you say the words stamp collecting at various places in your body copy -- then mentioning the words "stamp collecting" in the meta keywords tag MIGHT help boost your page a bit higher for those words.

Both can be found here with more info ...

Did a google search and haven't read these articles, so I don't know how good they actually are, but they seem to describe each tag:

I just spent the last hour on the meta-tag analyzer. It helped. Thanks.

Julie, be careful, you'll spend all day on this stuff. Laughing

I finally got my meta title at 91%, my description at 91%, and my keywords at 87%. It's driving me crazy because I can't find the "key" words to get them up even higher. I try every day and I'm out of ideas. Confused

I've not used a meta tag analyzer in A-G-E-S! Yes, thanks for the tip, I'll be careful ... but not too soon as I'm busy with SO many other things! Hey, remember that Robert DeNiro movie, "Analyze This!" Question

It's so frustrating. I'd take words out-add others-take them out-try to remember what I started with that ranked higher.

A-a-a-a-a-a-RGH!!!

Here's a hint for everyone

Analyze your url
then go to google and do a search for your type of items
see WHO comes up first
Analyze that URL and see what words they are using and which ones might apply to you as well.

I did that. Laughing and then added my own too. The number one ranked site didn't do so well on the meta tag analyzer though, so I ignored some of their advice. If my competition ranks before I do, they must be doing something right.

I will recommend to start with choosing the right keywords.

This is an excellent article by Matt Kirtok:
