eCRATER collects and submits automatically your products to Google Base and they appear on Google Products a bit later. However we submit only the "standard" attributes that can be applied on any product like product's name and description, price, image url, etc.
Now a support for additional more than 40 attributes has been added. Just use some of these attributes that are relevant to your items in your item's description. eCRATER will automatically collect and submit them.
eCRATER requires these attributes to be entered in a special format: [!attr-name:attr-value!]
We divided the new attributes in 2 groups:
I. General Attributes:
- brand
- isbn (for books)
- mpn (for all products types except Apparel, Beauty, Furniture, Garden, Jewelry, and Media)
- upc
II. Product Specific Attributes:
These are around 40 attributes that you can additionally use to describe your products. I am not going to list them here.
For more information please refer to the "Promote My Store" section in your eCRATER admin area. In addition we included list of all supported attributes in the contect help menu next to the description text box. [look for the small "?" icon].
If you are wondering whether or not you should add more attributes to your listings here is a citation from the Google Base website:
"Remember that including as many attributes as possible will increase your items' exposure in search results."

Where does this special format go in the listing? Can anyone create a sample listing to demonstrate? |

It is best to put these attributes at the end of your product description. Probably I will make them not appear when you look at the product's page but I haven't done this yet.
I will give you an example for the following product:
http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=1592922
This is a book so I will include the following attributes in case I can find all of them: isbn, mpn, author, binding, genre, pages, publisher. If I cannot find all of these I will include only those that I can find.
Here is what I will include at the end of my description:
[!isbn:0123456789!] where "0123456789" is the actual isbn for the book
[!mpn:12345!] where "12345" is the actual number
[!author:Elizabeth P. Fleming!]
[!binding:hard cover!]
[!genre:Kids Tales!]
[!pages:230!]
[!publisher:The Westminster Press!]
Also look at the Google link below. It gives some basic idea which attributes to include for different product types but you can use your imagination too.
http://www.google.com/base/products.html#specific
Please note that the "edition" attributes is not supported by eCRATER so I did not use it in the above example.

I'm still seeing mud...
How would we use this on collectibles such as say, old postcards or unmarked jewelry? |

djpoorfarmherefords - You can see what the description looks like here - http://bigtallmensclothing.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=1303605
Dimitri is working on hidden that info.
Quote: | just to have it seen? I thought that if you put all of this into the description, that it would be picked up by searches and so on. |
It will still be picked up. But the internet is an every changing place. Google may or may not decide if their coding isn't there it won't appear at all. BUT FOR NOW, it still appears.
Dimitri is saying that it might very well get better placment if it is there - since Google is obviously the one requesting it to be there Google has their unknown reasons for doing this.
If you sell on ebay thing of ebay item specifics - same deal really. People search specific terms and items with those specifically coded terms are found - those that don't use the item specifics items don't show up.
Maybe google is moving to the same type of thing. WHO KNOWS! lol
Personally, I can not take the time to go back to 2000+ items and add this info - BUT it will be on all my future listings. It certainly will do no harm. |

You are saying that my description of:
Kindergarten Cop
Kindergarten Cop DVD Action, Adventure UPC: 025192014529
Format: DVD
Rating: PG-13
Leading Role: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller
Release Date: 1998
Director: Ivan Reitman
UPC: 025192014529
Genre: Action, Adventure
[!UPC: 025192014529]
[!Format: DVD]
[! Rating: PG-13]
[!Leading Role: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller]
|
The above is incorrect.
1. Make sure there are no spaces before and after the attribute name.
2. Leading Role is invalid attribute
3. You do not have a close attribute tag. Each attribute needs to be closed with !]. Otherwise it will be ignored.
4. Here is how it should be:
[!UPC:025192014529!]
[!Format:DVD!]
[!Rating:PG-13!]
[!actor:Arnold Schwarzenegger!]
You can include also the following attributes:
[!director:!]
[!genre:!]
[!year:!]
If you just mention these in your description Google will not match ALL the information you provided to the right attributes. That's why they are asking to specify value for each attributes. This way it will be much easier for them to get this information.
Also I forgot to mention that the attribute name is case insensitive which means that all these will work:
[!UPC:025192014529!]
[!upc:025192014529!]
[!uPC:025192014529!]

Maybe for old postcard you can use:
- upc
- artist (if you know that artist who took the photo or drew the picture)
- department
- publisher
- width
- height
- year
For unmarked jewelry you can use:
- department
- material
- occassion
- style |

Google has made if clear for months now that "the more attriubutes the better your placement on the search engine."
If you do a Googlefeed, they upped the minimum number of attributes they will accept.
For my regular website, I have added about 10 different ones -- "location" "tax percentage" etc -- i.e., ones that I can add with one column on the spreadsheet. It definitely helps my placement.
Dimitri is doing us a tremendous favor in setting this up so we can add them here. There have been complaints lately that ecrater products aren't showing up as well as they used to -- well, this is probably why. So it is terrific that he has added this capability!
(I just set this store up 3 days ago and already had a sale. How sweet!) |

I am posting it here because well it's just easier to see that way.
Specify your item description here. Optionally, you can include Google Base attributes in your product's description. Just place them at the end. The more attributes you include in your product's description the greater the chances to receive better placement in Google Products. eCRATER requires these attributes to be entered in a special format: [!attr-name:attr-value!]. Please note that eCRATER does not support some Google Base attributes. All supported attrubutes with sample values assigned are shown below:
I. General Attributes
[!brand:Acme!]
[!isbn:0451524233!]
[!mpn:HSC0424PP!]
[!upc:834721479305!]
II. Product Specific Attributes
[!actor:Charlie Chaplin!]
[!age_range:2-5!]
[!artist:The Beatles!]
[!author:John Steinbeck!]
[!battery_life:3!]
[!binding:hardcover!]
[!capacity:128MB!]
[!color:red!]
[!department:men's!]
[!director:Steven Spielberg!]
[!display_type:LCD!]
[!feature:machine washable!]
[!focus_type:manual!]
[!format:DVD!]
[!functions:photo capability!]
[!genre:Rock and Roll!]
[!height:26 inches!]
[!length:36 inches!]
[!made_in:US!]
[!material:leather!]
[!megapixels:5.2 MP!]
[!occasion:engagement!]
[!operating_system:Linux!]
[!optical_drive:DVD-R!]
[!pages:180!]
[!platform:Nintendo Wii!]
[!processor_speed:1.67 GHz!]
[!publisher:Acme Publishing!]
[!rating:PG-13!]
[!resolution:1024x768!]
[!screen_size:14.1 in!]
[!size:medium!]
[!style:casual!]
[!tech_spec_link:http://!]
[!width:36 in!]
[!year:2005!]
[!zoom:4x!]
Make sure you include only RELEVANT to your products attributes. For more information please click on the "Promote My Store" link located at the left navigation menu. |

A question here. How about creating custom attributes? Would Google be able to pick it up as well? If so, what is the input format for custom attributes then? |

skincareideas - not sure I totally understand your question
but maybe I do
You want to use all the attributes in the above list that apply to your product.
The format is shown above with and example of what you put in the value.
example
[!color:red!] - where it says red you put whatever color the item you have is. |

Oh, I mean what would the format be like for created attributes not available on the list.
For instance, if I am creating a customised attribute named promotion_offer, such as one that I can create for my bulk upload to Google Base. Example: For my bulk upload file, I would input the attribute as c:promotion_offer:boolean (attribute named as promotion_offer taking value as yes/no or true/false).
In such cases, how should we key that in our ecrater description list?
Unlike standardised attributes where the attribute name and value are already predefine by google base, customised attributes might not be recognised by google base if inputted simply in [!attribute:value!] format.
