Was watching a mini series on netflix about
natural disasters and storms and for the tornado
portion they mention Joplin, MO and it made
me sad, almost cried actually.
I lived in Joplin in 2011 and was staying in the
Holiday Inn hotel until I decided where to live
and was gonna buy a house in Joplin but I took
off to Texas to go visit some family for a few days and
on the way home I heard on the radio it was destroyed,
couldn't even get off the exit ramp when I got back.
I had my belongings with me but the whole town was
gone and I was just there 2 days before. That could've
been me in that tornado!
Tornados are more dangerous than we think.
I've been in a few and they make your nerves
clench up and give you stomach butterflies for sure!
But I learned in that show the safest place to be if
you don't have a basement, not just the bathtub
but under the stairs. They built real houses and
tested them with real simulated storms and the only
thing left standing was the stairs every time or grab
ahold of the toilet, wrap your legs around the base. |

I've been in major hurricanes and minor earthquakes but never a tornado. Not eager for the experience. |
