From AnimalPlanet.Com
Steve was killed during a filming expedition on the Great Barrier Reef. While we are still collecting specific details, it was a rare accident in which Steve swam over a stingray and was stung by its barb in his chest. A doctor on board Croc One, Steve's research vessel, was unable to resuscitate Steve and by the time he was reached by the rescue helicopter he had passed away.

I loved his shows, his smile, his devotion and his energy. My heart goes to his family - the two children left fatherless and the wife whose heart is breaking. To the Father who, no doubt, has aged 20 years in hours... the friends and co-workers who sweated beside him and understood his work. Countless tears have been shed today and will be for many days to follow, for this gentle soul.
Steve Irwin -- joins my list of the legendary lost, John Denver and John Lennon... sadly missed.

Thank you for this post and for the links.
My family love Steve, Terri and the kids. We were heartbroken to hear of his death. He was an amazing person who is deeply missed by all who loved him.
We watch the entire memorial service and last night I was able to catch some of the interview Barbara Walters had with Terri.
