So many of you have probably seen the other thread where I talk about adopting two more goats and a llama. Well the vet came over today to look them all over.

We were told Lauren the llama was female and with the heavy wool coat it's hard to check so we just accepted what we were told. Well the vet was checking that area as part of Lauren's physical and he looked up and said "well you don't have to worry about Lauren coming in heat, he's a gelded male". I've barely stopped laughing.

For the same reason you geld a horse or neuter a dog, intact males get aggressive can with both people and other livestock and if not allowed to breed with female llamas will sometimes hurt (or even kill) female goats by trying to mount them. It also prevents some health problems that can occur in a non-breeding male that isn't gelded.

Noadi, do you live on a working farm, an animal rescue farm, or just have a big yard?

It's a very small non-producing farm. We raise some veggies and have laying hens for eggs but all for our own use.

Llamas are from the Andes mountains in South America, they're still raised there as pack animals, for wool and meat. Lauren is just a pet though I'd like to train him for packing so we can hike together.

If they get really annoyed they will spit but so far Lauren hasn't spit at anyone even when the vet was giving him his shots yesterday.

Not a chance! Maybe some of the desire is gone, but not the ability!
